Enterprise Mobility: 10 Smartphone, Tablet Flaws That Must Disappear In 2011

Never before has so much attention been placed on the smartphone market. Whether it’s Apple’s iPhone, RIM’s BlackBerry or countless devices from so many other vendors, the smartphone space is a critical battleground for a slew of companies. The same can be said for the tablet space. Although Apple’s iPad dominates that market, several competitors are vying for attention. But the chances of 2011 becoming a banner year for both smartphones and tablets will rely upon the ability of vendors to deliver products with features that consumers and enterprise customers really want. The only way to achieve that goal will be to find the issues that those customers are experiencing now with smartphones and tablets, and address them. Of course, some companies will be more likely to do that better than others. But the firm that eliminates the following features will be most likely to see success with smartphone or tablet designs. Read on to find out which shortcomings in tablet or smartphone designs must be banished in 2011.

Apple expected to hold event by Valentine's Day to announce Verizon iPhone

Apple is expected to hold an event "very soon," perhaps by Valentine's Day on Feb. 14, 2011, to unveil a new CDMA version of the iPhone compatible with U.S. carrier Verizon's network.

In a report issued Wednesday evening by Bloomberg Businessweek, the alleged coming debut of the iPhone on Verizon is portrayed as an "enormous problem" for AT&T, the current exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the U.S. While AT&T has had sole access to the iPhone since 2007, problems with its network have caused bad press, including a recent reader poll from Consumer Reports ranking AT&T the worst carrier in America.

"Verizon enjoys a reputation for reliability," author Peter Burrows wrote. "AT&T is notorious for dropping calls, especially in densely populated places like New York and San Francisco where iPhones are most common and cell towers get loaded."

The report said that Apple would hold one of its own "splashy product introductions to announce a new version of the iPhone that work's on Verizon's network," and said that event would "maybe" come by Valentine's Day.

Some have speculated that Apple would instead allow Verizon to announce the product at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January, an uncharacteristic move for the typically controlling iPhone maker. But the report specifically stated that a CES unveiling is not in the plans.

"Apple's introduction of an iPhone for use on Verizon's network will come sometime after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, according to a person familiar with Apple's plans who is not authorized to discuss them publicly," Burrows wrote.

But while the apparently loss of exclusivity on the iPhone is cause for concern for AT&T, the report also suggested that Verizon could experience its own growing pains when Apple's smartphone arrives on its network.

"At least initially, Verizon's iPhone may have weaknesses compared to AT&T's," the report said. "The expense and hassle of changing carriers could also work to AT&T's advantage."

It also noted that iPhone customers may be less likely to switch from AT&T if they are still under contract, as the carrier upped its termination fee to $325 in May of this year. The carrier also offered early upgrades for some iPhone 4 buyers whose contracts had not expired, locking them in to another two full years.

Apple's iPad 2 rumored to have USB port

With the bulk of the holiday shopping buzz dying down, rumors of Apple's new iPad 2 have sprung to life. The most recent rumor, courtesy of the Mobile Review blog editor-in-chief Eldar Murtazin, says the iPad 2 will include a USB port.

The tweet, discovered by AppleInsider, reads:

"Talked with colleague which working with some ODM vendors connected with Apple. He is research guy. According to his sources iPad2 will have usb port."

AppleInsider reports that Murtazin is a trusted insider with good sources and the news of the integrated USB could be the result of a European device-maker pact that decided micro-USB ports should be standard device charging ports. Apple, of course, uses the 30-pin dock connector for its mobile devices, including the iPad.

Including an integrated USB port would also quickly make obsolete the USB adapter kit provided by Apple for the iPad. Currently, the USB adapter only supports importing photos from digital cameras, though some other peripheral devices have been said to work.

There is no word whether an integrated USB port would offer greater functionality. In the meantime, expect rumors to keep flowing from various sources as the new iPad gets closer to be announced and released.

The State of the iOS App Store

Quiz: how much does the average iOS app cost? What percentage of apps are free? And can you guess which application has over 1 million ratings in the iPhone App Store?

The people over at App of the Day have crunched the numbers and, using data available from Apple and other sources, broken down the iOS app landscape. They have also created an elegant infographic to visualize the data. Some of the results might surprise you.

“Using a variety of sources including Apple’s RSS feeds and search APIs, we put together a collection of data that we then analyzed to produce the infographic,” founder Jordan Satok explained to us.

According to App of the Day’s analysis, 67% of applications in the App Store (App Store) are paid apps, and 50% of all apps (not just paid applications) cost less than $3.00. The vast majority of these apps are for the iPhone — a whopping 85% are iPhone-only, while another 8% are “universal” apps for iPad and iPhone (iPhone).

One surprise is that books beat out games as the top category for apps in Apple’s marketplace. The reason for the dominance of books in the App Store is due to one developer who has over 7,000 book apps in the iOS App Store alone. Entertainment, education and lifestyle rounded out the top five categories.

Finally, App of the Day analyzed the average prices of apps based on category. Book apps cost an average of $5, while the price of an iOS game (paid and free combined) hovered right around the $1 mark. Unsurprisingly, the most expensive category of apps was the medical sector, whose average price is in the $7 range.

We have included App of the Day’s infographic below. Do any of these App Store stats stand out to you? Let us know in the comments.

(For Me, I just download the free apps, if it costs, I maybe turn to Android market. Becauses I have an iPhone 4 and Motorola XT 702. But I would never turn down the cost iPad Video Converter, iPhone 4 Ringtone Maker and DVD to iPhone 4 Converter, I think they're worth being paid for.)

Republican Election Wins Could Hinder Net Neutrality

The national election results likely spell the demise of net neutrality, because the Republican Congressmen slated to gain control of the House Energy and Commerce Committee are dead set against approving the consumer-friendly policy promoted by the Democratic-led FCC.

Net neutrality, which generally calls for unregulated Internet speeds, had been bogged down for months anyway, because several conservative Democrats also opposed net neutrality, dooming the concept to gridlock status. In addition, the Washington Circuit Court of Appeals, which already delivered a blow against net neutrality, would likely strike down any attempt to revive the concept.

At Interop NYC 2010, InformationWeek's Fritz Nelson finds an attendee roaming the floor with a bag so full of schwag that would make most professioanl trick-or-treaters jealous. From the show floor at Interop 2010 in NYC, InformationWeek TV gets a demonstration of Quest Softwares vWorkspace virtual desktop and application management solution. Interviews with the winner and a runner up of the first annual MIT Sloan CIO Symposium Innovation awards
From the show floor at Interop 2010 in NYC, InformationWeek TV gets a demonstration of Quest Software s vWorkspace virtual desktop and application management solution.

Another blow to net neutrality and indeed to much of the telecommunications legislation proposed by an FCC led by Democratic chairman Julius Genachowski was the election loss of Congressman Rick Boucher (D-VA.), a 25-year veteran of Congress, who has led the cause for Democrats in the House as chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee.

All three Republican Congressmen said to be leading candidates for the chairman's post are outspoken opponents of the net neutrality concept and much of the FCC's proposed legislation including its National Broadband Plan. They are Joe Barton (R-Tex.), Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.)

No one denies that there are some pressing issues that need action, but somehow regulators and Congress have been fumbling over key telecom issues for years. Ever since the terrorist attack of 9/11 occurred when public safety workers couldn't communicate with each other, there has been near universal agreement that the US desperately needs an effective and robust nationwide public safety network.

Republican and Democrat congressman are in agreement over the need for an effective public safety network, but they have been unable to develop a plan to make it happen. A big chunk of the 700 MHz spectrum that was auctioned two years ago, was supposed to be set aside for a public safety network, but the plan for it was too complicated and no serious bids were submitted.

"We believe Republican mid-term election gains would generally strengthen the hand of the Bells, cable and broadcasters over their telecom media and tech rivals," according to Rebecca Arbogast, an analyst at investment firm Stifel Nicolaus. Roughly translated that means telecoms like AT&T and Verizon Communications are likely to see their positions gain while positions of Internet technology firms like Google and Skype could lose traction.

Will Redistricting Be a Bloodbath? GOP Sees Historic Victories in State Legislatures

Republicans gained a historic edge over Democrats in state legislature elections that will have national implications for years to come.

State legislatures in 44 states are responsible for one of the most important political processes: drawing district boundaries for the U.S. House of Representatives. In a process that triggers partisan bickering, the reigning party usually has the upper hand, especially if the governor is also Republican and cannot veto the legislature's decisions.

Republicans took control of at least 19 Democratic-controlled state legislatures Tuesday and gained more than 650 seats, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The last time Republicans saw such victories was in 1994, when they captured control of 20 state legislatures.

Republicans haven't controlled as many state legislatures since 1928.

Across the country, the map for state legislatures has turned noticeably red as Republicans now control 55 chambers, with Democrats at 38 and the remaining yet to be decided. At the beginning of this week, Democrats controlled 60 of the country's state legislative chambers and Republicans 36.

Tuesday also was a historic day for many state legislatures. In Minnesota, Republicans won the Senate for the first time ever, while in Alabama, they took control for the first time since reconstruction.

The gains were truly of "historic proportions," said Tim Storey, a senior fellow at the National Conference of State Legislatures, pointing out that the last time there was such a wave of state legislature switches was 1966.

Apple's Jobs: No Plans For USB 3.0 On Macs

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Tuesday dispelled rumors that Apple is planning to adopt USB 3.0 for its Mac computers. He then proceeded to point the finger at chip maker Intel (NSDQ:INTC).

When a potential Apple customer e-mailed Jobs and asked why there were no Mac computers with USB 3.0 currently available, Jobs replied "We don't see USB 3.0 taking off at this time. No support from Intel, for example," according to the Apple blog 9 to 5 Mac.

Jobs' answer suggests that Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple could get behind the platform once Intel adopts it. USB 3.0 offers a theoretical 10X jump over current USB 2.0 speed and can handle data transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps.

Intel's relative slowness in offering USB 3.0 support has to do with its adoption of Light Peak, an optical cable interface designed to connect devices in a peripheral bus. Light Peak would offer a single universal replacement for current buses including the USB line. However, Intel denies any role as an impediment to Mac users obtaining USB 3.0.

"Intel is indeed supportive of USB 3.0," an Intel spokesperson told CRN. The spokesperson declined to comment on Steve Jobs's statement.
Details have slowly emerged regarding Intel's plans for the fiber-optic, backwards-compatible USB 3.0 technology. According to Digitimes, Intel is planning to offer 22nm CPUs with native support for USB 3.0 in 2012. This means USB 3.0 technology will be baked into Intel's upcoming processor line, code-named Chief River, which is set to begin production next year.

Based on the upcoming Ivy Bridge architecture, Chief River will replace the Huron River line of processors designed for notebooks. Apple's successful iPhone and iPad do not feature an Intel chip. They run on the ARM-based A4 chip, which Apple manufactures itself, instead.

In August, Intel acquired Infineon Wireless Solutions, whose chips, conversely, are featured inside the iPhone. The company has announced plans to add mobile capability, as well as graphics processing, to select chipsets. It may now be doing the same with connectivity options.

Technological Triumph: Apple Lands on Top

Apple Inc. has upped its game in Asia this year. You won't see the evidence so much in market share as in a scene that has become almost commonplace: people lining up for hours (or even days) to be among the first to get an iPhone 4 or iPad. Gray markets and scalpers have sprung up as entrepreneurial individuals try to profit from this Asian demand. So it comes as no surprise that the company has defended its spot at the top of The Wall Street Journal's annual Asia 200 survey.

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs speaks on stage, with the Shanghai Apple store displayed on a screen behind him, during Apple's music-themed September media event in San Francisco in September.

Indeed, big technology names occupy all but two positions in the top 10. Lilian Leong, managing director at advertising agency Leo Burnett in Hong Kong, says the findings reflect the boom in consumer demand. With Asia having firmly recovered from the economic downturn, people are simply "looking to enjoy life more," she said.

Apple's market share in Asia is still tiny, but rising, notably in smartphones. According to market-research firm IDC, Apple had 9.4% of that market in the second quarter of 2010, up from 4.6% a year earlier. (There was less progress with personal computers, where its share rose to 1.8% from 1.6%.)

Bryan Ma, Singapore-based director of personal systems research at IDC, said Apple, which has traditionally focused on North America and Western Europe, is clearly starting to prioritize Asia. "It's relieving to see them making an effort internationally," he said.

Another technology leader that consistently performs well in the Asia 200 is Nokia Corp., amid questions surrounding its smartphone and Internet strategy. Nokia remains the largest cellphone producer in the world by production and continues to draw a strong following in Asia.

The Asia 200 survey found it the fifth-most-admired company in the region, in the top five in both innovation and quality—though it may be telling that Nokia dropped to 10th place from seventh in long-term vision. This reflects worries that the company has become excessively bureaucratic, hampering its ability to respond quickly to rivals.

Still, with its recent change at the top—bringing in its first non-Finnish chief executive—the company demonstrated that it is willing to break with tradition. Nokia also announced, when releasing its third-quarter earnings, plans to streamline operations (including a 3% cut in work force) and sharpen the focus on its Internet business.

Nokia has more than 40% of the global smartphone market—it's particularly popular in emerging markets—but its profit margins are lower than its competitors' and its Symbian OS is increasingly under threat from Google Inc.'s Android. "Android is really moving in the direction of competing against Apple," said Anshul Gupta, Gartner's Mumbai-based principal analyst. "The experience you get on some of the good Android devices is quite close to that of Apple's."

Indeed, the positive reception toward Samsung Electronics Co.'s new Galaxy smartphone, which runs Android, helped shift the company up four places to 12th overall in the Asia 200 rankings. In its home market, South Korea, Samsung tops the list, ahead of Apple and Microsoft Corp. of the U.S.

Microsoft, too, has stepped up as a smartphone competitor, launching Windows Phone 7 in early October. It is third overall in this year's survey, clawing back ground following a fall to sixth place in 2009 from first the year before, when it was dogged by antitrust lawsuits in Europe and a messy, unsuccessful bid for Yahoo Inc. Once more this year it ranks as the multinational with the best long-term vision, continuing a streak that dates to 2002.

Notably rolling in the other direction was Toyota Motor Corp., traditionally a strong performer in the survey, which slid down the overall list to 14th place from second after being plagued by massive global recalls. In corporate reputation, it fell to ninth place from first. At home in Japan, it ranked 12th overall, down from fifth.

Amazon.com Inc. shot up the table to 19th place from 32nd as the growing interest in e-books and tablets helped raise the company's profile in Asia. Though the actual number of e-book users in Asia is still comparatively small, Leo Burnett's Ms. Leong says just the "perception" that Amazon.com is innovating is enough to boost its standing.

Intel Corp. rose by 10 places to fourth as it kept itself in the spotlight through a string of acquisitions—more evidence of its longstanding skill at turning a "behind the scenes" technology company into a consumer brand.

Apple iPad, tablets eat in to netbook demand

Remember how netbooks were the big craze last holiday season? Well, it looks like the Apple iPad and the slew of other tablets have caused demand for these mini-computers to crater.

The data comes from ChangeWave and the research firm said that demand for these netbooks have gone down considerably. Previously reports suggests 24% of people buying laptops in the next 90 days were considering a netbook, but the latest round suggests that just 14% would consider netbooks.

ChangeWave said :

Not surprisingly, Apple is the biggest beneficiary here – with four-in-five likely Tablet buyers (80%) saying they’ll purchase an iPad.

Research In Motion’s yet-to-be-released PlayBook tablet comes in second in terms of consumer planned buying at 8%, followed by the Samsung Galaxy Tab (3%) and the H-P Slate (2%). But with the iPad having already set the bar so very high in terms of customer expectations, these new Tablets all have their work cut out for them in order to succeed in the race to gain new market share.

Obviously, these tablets are really cool devices but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some other factors. First of all, the boom is definitely off the rose with netbooks – whether it’s the cramped keyboard or pokey performance, many are deciding to spend that extra few hundred to get a decent laptop.

There is also something undeniably appealing about devices like the iPad, as there are portable, touch-friendly and can handle many of the daily tasks that average consumers are interested in like surfing the web and sending out e-mails.

The problem with tablets, in my opinion, is that these devices are still pretty pricey. The $500-entry point on the iPad isn’t too far off what you could get a decent PC for. The Galaxy Tab will be similarly priced and the discounted versions will still come with onerous long-term contracts.

Bored with life: The lonely Facebook generation

They have thousands of online Facebook friends and use social networking to text, blog and Twitter their every thought.

But Britain's 16 to 24-year-olds - the so-called Facebook generation - are lonelier than any other age group, researchers found yesterday.

One in three said they were bored with their lives, compared to just eight per cent of pensioners, and 28 per cent complained that loneliness was making them unhappy.

Worryingly, more than a quarter revealed they turned to alcohol for comfort, and half admitted to using junk food as an emotional crutch.

The depressing picture of life for young people in Britain emerged from a survey into national happiness levels, conducted for BBC Radio 3.

As Britain comes to terms with swingeing new austerity measures, teenagers and young adults emerged as having the greatest worries about work and money.

Asked what made them unhappy, 70 per cent of the Facebook generation said finances topped their list of concerns.

More than a third were worried about holding down a job, compared to a quarter of middle-aged respondents.

One in three said they were tormented by family or relationship problems, and they were also the age group that were most likely to struggle over their social status.

Overall, money was the biggest cause of unhappiness across all age groups, above work, relationships and loneliness.

But while older age groups shared the Facebook generation's finance fears, they were more fulfilled in other areas of their lives.

Almost a third of the youngest generation reported they had relationship problems, which dropped to just eight per cent among 55 to 64-year-olds.

And one in three of the Facebook generation - more than any other age group - said they wanted to move abroad in search of happiness.

Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings said: 'There's nothing wrong with social networking, but if it's used instead of face-to-face meetings or phone calls than it can be very isolating.

'Real friendships are made through shared experiences and bonds. Some social networking "friends" are barely even acquaintances, without any real meaning or intimacy.'

Official Facebook iPad App About to be Launched?

When it comes to organizing events high on expectations, Apple seldom disappoints. It looks like Mark Zuckerberg and the rest of the Facebook gang are learning from their Cupertino-based neighbor, as Facebook just sent invitations for a limited number of folks, for a “a Mobile Event at Facebook HQ.”

So far, very little is known about what the company plans to talk about, however several major announcements are expected, namely a re-engineered mobile site specifically designed for iOS-based and Android devices, an official Facebook app for the iPad, and even a potential Facebook smartphone.

The new iPad app is expected to take full advantage of the real estate offered by the iPad’s screen, and is rumored to offer a Facebook experience far superior to most other Facebook apps already available in the App Store today.

Besides the app, an Android-based Facebook smartphone is also expected to be announced, even though Facebook denied working on a smartphone countless times.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, 10:30 Pacific Time. When it comes to showmanship, Mark Zuckerberg is still light-years away from Steve Jobs, but still, expect a buzz-packed Wednesday morning.

Top 25 Facebook Games for November 2010

Though last month saw only moderate losses for the top Facebook games, this month has 18 of 25 applications losing significant numbers of monthly active users. The drop is not entirely unprecedented, as each year, starting around this time, the activity for social games tends to drop. Even so, the overall losses are significantly more than this time last year — perhaps in part because many of the games on the list are a year or more old.

To counter these declines, many of the games on this list, especially the Zynga apps, have had boosts in advertising going as far back as this spring, but the new players don’t always stick around. For example, FarmVille saw minor growth last month, but has dropped over 5.6 million MAU this month.

The handful of growing games are mostly either newer or experiencing fresh growth after long declines. The new games include Millionaire City and Car Town, the latter appearing for the first time with growth of over a million new MAU in the past month. There is, however, a boom among smaller developers, which we’ve covered in more detail here.

Apple’s Next Macintosh OS

Operating systems don’t age well. Some have better genes than others or they have more competent caretakers, but sooner or later they are stricken by a cancer of bug fixes upon bug fixes, upgrades upon upgrades. I know, I lived inside two OS sausage factories, Apple and Be, and was closely associated with a third, PalmSource. I can recall the smell.

The main cause of OS cancer is backwards compatibility, the need to stay compatible with existing application software. OS designers are caught between yesterday and tomorrow. Customers want the benefit of the future, new features, hardware and software, but without having to jettison their investment in the past, in their applications.
OS architects dream of a pure rebirth, a pristine architecture born of their hard won knowledge without having to accommodate the sins of their fathers. But, in the morning-and in the market-the dream vanishes and backwards compatibility wins.

Enter the iPhone.

The iPhone OS, iOS, is a Macintosh OS X derivative…but without having to support Macintosh applications. Pared down to run on a smaller hardware platform, cleaned up to be more secure and tuned for a Touch UI, iOS is the dream without the ugly past. Tens of millions of iPhones, hundreds of thousands of applications, and billions of downloads later, this is a new morning without the hangover.

And now we have the iPad, another iOS device. (I’ll omit the newer Apple TV for the time being.) 8.5 million iPads were shipped by September, a mere six months after its introduction. The installed base will reach 14 to 15 million units by the end of this year.

To paraphrase the always modest Apple PR boilerplate phrase (“Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s …”) the iPad re-ignited the marginal tablet category.

After more than 30 years of stalled attempts, the tablet genre has finally gelled. We see a flurry of tablet announcements from Asus, HP, Samsung, Dell, Archos, and many others, using Windows 7, WebOS, and Android. Surprisingly, we have yet to hear a pundit declare 2011 ‘The Year of The Tablet.’ It’ll come.

On the other hand… Apple held a Back to the Mac event at its Cupertino HQ last week. As the name implies, Apple wants to make it clear that it’s still committed to personal computers. (You can see the full keynote here…but that’s 90 minutes. A tongue-in-cheek, adjective-laden 104 second montage gets to the essence here.) The iPhone may generate half of Apple’s revenue, but the event reminded us that Macintosh desktops and laptops are a $20B/yr business-a business that’s growing faster than the rest of the PC industry. Apple made a point of showing how the iPad, after taking its genes from the Mac, was feeding DNA back to its progenitor by way of the Touch UI that will appear in the release dubbed “Lion”, OS X 10.7.

Back to the Mac

During the Back to the Mac presentation, two prayers of mine were answered: A Macintosh App Store and a smaller laptop. The App Store has received the expected “walled garden” critique, but having seen how difficult it is for small Mac software developers to get retail shelf space or to make money selling their wares on line, I like the idea. A few days ago, I downloaded a neat little utility to silence the startup sound on my new 11” MacBook Air. How much did the developer make? Zero, it’s freeware; the programmer didn’t want to spend the time and money to set up a commercial site. How much would I have paid for it from a Mac App Store? Less than $5, more than 99 cents.
As for the 11” MacBook Air, Walt Mossberg, WSJ’s tech guru, penned an insightful review that’s neatly summed up in its title: “MacBook Air Has the Feel Of an iPad In a Laptop”.
So: A clean, fresh iOS; we’re not abandoning the Mac…What are we to make of these competing messages? My theory:

* Today’s PC operating systems have advanced cancer

* Personal computers as we know them are here to stay

* Apple will move to something like an iOS Macintosh

Easier said than done. Steve Jobs remembers well the trouble Apple had getting apps for the first Macintosh, the painful failures of Lotus Jazz, the lame Mac software from Software Publishing Corp., creator of the best-selling PFS: series for the Apple ][. Ironically, some of the best software came from Microsoft-the word frenemy hadn’t been coined yet but retroactively fits. So, just like the iPhone App Store made the iPhone, the Macintosh needs a marketplace, an agora in preparation for the transition.

AVI to DVD Converter can easily can quickly burn AVI files to DVD Disc, convert AVI to DVD Video, decode AVI movie to ISO files.

AVI to DVD Mac is the most reliable DVD burner software for you to create DVD Slideshows, burn ISO images, convert videos and movies to DVD.

But a transition to what?

An evolution of the iPad? Certainly not something I saw at Il Fornaio, one of the local Valley watering holes. There, a very serious woman had her iPad standing on the official Apple keyboard dock, writing and, from time to time, raising her hand and touching something on the screen. As Jobs pointed out in the keynote above, it’s an ergonomic no-no.

Now, turn to the laptop. As one of my colleagues says: “It’s dark inside the box.” It’s what the machine does that matters, not what’s inside.

Indeed. Imagine a port of OS X on an ARM, or A4, or AX processor, or even a Loongson CPU for that matter. If the right applications have been ported or adapted or, even better, created de novo for the platform -and made available through the App Store-would we object?

But, you’ll argue, “Aren’t these processors much less powerful than Intel’s?” Ask an iPad user: The machine feels swift and fluid, much more than a conventional PC.

Yes, there are no heavy-duty apps such as Photoshop or
AutoCAD for the iPad. (AutoDesk publishes an AutoCAD companion app for the iPad and the iPhone.), but who knows? Adobe might be tempted to do for Photoshop what Apple has done for its OS: Scrap the past and build a modern Photoshop that’s written from the ground up.

Intel processors suffer the same type of cancer that afflicts operating systems. Their instruction sets and, therefore, their hardware, power consumption, and cost are beset by the tortuous need to stay compatible with existing code while offering an endless procession of new features. Intel has tried a fresh approach at least three times: the iPAX 32 in the early 80s, the Itanium (promptly renamed Itanic, a political compromise hammered out to keep HP’s PA architecture out of contention), and a brief fling with ARM called the XScale. Each time, the company (or the market) decided backwards compatibility was the way to go. Intel’s position is transparent: They believe that the might of their technology and manufacturing will bulldoze the cost and power consumption obstacles of the x86 architecture.

(We’ll note in passing that there is no Wintel in smartphones. For its Really Personal Computers, for its Windows Phone 7 devices, Microsoft is all ARM.)

Compare the bulldozer approach to what Apple did when it designed the A4, the “dark inside” of the iPad. Apple’s next Mac processor could be a multicore (or multi-chip) ARM derivative. And the company has proven time and again that it knows how to port software, and its support of the Open Source LLVM and Clang projects give it additional hardware independence. We all know the Apple Way: Integration. From bare metal to the flesh, from the processor to the Apple Store. Hardware, OS, applications, distribution… Apple knows how to control its own destiny.

Tomorrow’s MacBook Air might have even more of the “Feel of an iPad in a Laptop” that Walt Mossberg detected. The tablet and the laptop could run on the same “dark insides”, with the same software, and the same Touch UI interface. And, for a desktop machine, an iMac successor, we already have the Magic Trackpad for touch input.

(IMCO, the current Trackpad doesn’t feel magical enough: on the two devices I own, the touch input isn’t as reliable, pleasant and “second nature” as it is with existing mice or a laptop trackpads. I gave up after two weeks. I’m not the only one with that view, I’ve asked. And the local Apple Store doesn’t push appear eager to push the device either.)

All this doesn’t mean the x86-based Macs would disappear overnight: high-end Mac Pros, for example, might continue for a while as they do today for applications such as Logic Studio or Final Cut.

If this sounds farfetched, one question and an observation. The question: Would you bet the longer term future of your $20B Mac business on an endless series of painfully debugged x86-based OS X incremental releases? Or would you rather find a way to move that franchise to a fresh hardware/software platform fully under your control?

Apple shipping about 700,000 MacBook Airs, most wanted 11-inch display

The new MacBook Air from Apple is supposed to ship in its highest volume ever, according to analyst Mingchi Kuo from Concord Securities. 700,000 Macs out of the 4.1 million estimated to ship in the fall would be ultraportables. This means 17 percent of the total number. Furthermore, 420,000 of them would be represented by the 11-inch model, and the analyst is confident that buyers are inclined to trade speed for size and price.

The analyst’s story corroborates one of the largest Apple productions for the MacBook Air starting from September.

The analyst also says to know some parts suppliers. The 11-inch display would be made by AU Optronics, while the unibody aluminium chassis would be the creation of Catcher. Auras is supposed to make the heat spreader and the cooling fan. The final assembly is handled by Quanta.

A long term forecast is not possible, but Kuo thinks that the release of the Mac OS X Lion would represent a jumpstart able to bring customers towards the Air as a secondary option.

Traditionally, ultraportable sales have been associated to a niche, compared to larger product lines. Systems such as Sony VAIO X or Dell Latitude E series have often been downplayed when compared to bigger models. However, Apple has reversed this situation and has projected the Air as the long-term future of all of its designs. Therefore, its production numbers possibly reflect its position.

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook: Threat For Apple iPad?

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook Vs Apple iPad: The world has been in a state of uncontrolled frenzy ever since the time that Steve Jobs announced that Apple was releasing the iPad tablet computer a few months ago in the spring to summer time of the year. However, there is a reason for the great showing of the iPad from Apple in the market for tablet computers.

Up until this time the iPad was the only answer than pad makers had to the demand that was being generated by the users in the market. But times have changed now and now there are more answers to the questions. The Samsung Galaxy Tab as well as other makers has come up with new tablet computers running on the Android platform or other operating systems have been launched or are just about to be launched in the near future.
However, the greatest threat that the gurus believe would have been posed to the iPad is by the announcement of the RIM Playbook. The first reason why the RIM tablet is the most formidable opponent is that were holding the most market share in the US for smartphones only until a few weeks ago.

Also, the business class customers are almost certain to choose Research in Motion over Apple for the enterprise solutions and security features. But that is not the only reason, the specs look mighty fine as well. the 7-inch screen is dwarfed by the 10.1-inch iPad screen but then it scores one up with a camera flash.

Also, the dual core processor processing at 1GHz and using a 1 GB of RAM makes it a list topper in performance. And the video capture is 1080 pixels of full HD, which Apple still have to match. The device would be launched in the first quarter of the next year and come that be, Apple is going to have some serious catching up to do for its iPad.

Features like dual cameras of 5 and 3 MP respectively, augurs well for the device. The flexibility to choose devices of up to 64GB also stands it in good stead and so does the battery life and the connectivity options available.

Good News: Microsoft unlocks Windows Phone 7 developers

REDMOND, Wash.--Microsoft is making a change to its policies for Windows Phone 7 that will allow applications to more easily run when the screen is turned off.

Until now, applications that wanted to run when the screen was locked had to get the user's explicit permission. Under new rules announced on Friday, programs can do so without permission--provided they first demonstrate to Microsoft that they only use a reasonable amount of battery life (allowing more than six hours of use for an app playing audio and more than 120 hours for a program that does not play audio). (Credit: Microsoft)

The move comes as the first Windows Phone 7 devices have gone on sale in Europe and Asia, with the first phones hitting the U.S. market on November 8.

The policy change is a matter of both convenience--audio apps, for example, make sense to play when the screen is off--as well as fairness. Many of Microsoft's own apps, including application downloading, e-mail syncing, and Zune playback and downloads are all allowed to happen in the background.

"This is an example of us continuing to listen to customers," Microsoft's Charlie Kindel said in an interview at Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference here. "We think it is a much better experience."

Some developers have complained that Microsoft allows only certain tasks to run in the background and also that its applications do things that third-party programs cannot. Background music playing is one such feature, while another is direct control of the camera for tasks beyond basic image capture. Microsoft has allowed, for example, hardware makers like LG to do an augmented reality app, but that is not something an ordinary developer can do using the available tools.

Kindel reiterated that Microsoft plans to add more controls and programming interfaces over time but has no plans to allow developers to write native applications. Third-party applications have to be written for either Silverlight or XNA development environments.
