ProRes is not a video format used for practical or end-user viewing, it is just a line of intermediate codec, and we can classify it as a lossy video compression format. The ProRes is developed by Apple fo Final Cut Pro and it is intended for use during video editing. MXF is a self-container format which is unacceptable to many editing software, like FCP, Sony Vegas, Avid DNxHD, etc. So if you wanna import MXF files to Final Cut Pro for further editing, convert MXF to ProRes is a perfect solution.
