Top 7 Questions About The iPad 2- I want an iPad 2

Will the iPad 2 be generally the same size and design as the original iPad?

This seems likely. The iPad's 10-inch screen is a good middle ground between a smartphone and a laptop.

But we assume the iPad 2 will be thinner. And the case itself may be made out of different materials.- Expect iPad 3 so excited.

BONUS: iAds for iPad? by bestlaptopbattery.co.uk

Will the iPad 2 support Verizon?

Apple has already started selling the iPad at Verizon Wireless, bundled with a mi-fi wireless hotspot.

Given that the companies now have an official relationship, it makes sense that the iPad 2 could ship in a Verizon-compatible edition. (Perhaps alongside a Verizon iPhone.)

Now the question is: Will the iPad 2 support Verizon's (and AT&T's) new 4G networks? Or only 3G for now, because of battery life, 4G network size, etc.?

And: Will Apple let carriers subsidize the price of the iPad, if someone signs a 2-year data contract?

When the iPad 2 comes out, what happens to the first iPad?

We assume the iPad 2 will cost the same $499 entry price as the iPad. (Barring any carrier subsidies.)

But if Apple can, it makes sense to knock the price of the original iPad down by $100 or $150, using it to draw people into the store, the way the $99 iPhone does. (Many of those people will actually end up buying the more expensive iPad 2.)- Yes, it is true.

The future of the iPad is having three or four of them sitting around the house and office. So the more affordable Apple can make them, the faster that future can be realized.

Will the iPad 2 have a retina display?

Will the iPad 2 have a retina display? by bestlaptopbattery.co.uk

It makes sense for Apple to increase the screen resolution on the iPad, the way it has with the iPhone and iPod touch. But as many have argued, it would be challenging for Apple to quadruple the iPad's resolution the way it has with its smaller devices. That would be a LOT of pixels to power.

Perhaps a middle ground, that's more pixel-dense than today's iPad, but not as crazy as the iPhone?

Or maybe Apple will really push the limits and push out an amazingly gorgeous 10-inch retina display?

Will there be a front-facing camera for FaceTime chats?

This is one of the most obvious, definite additions to the iPad 2. We fully expect a front-facing camera on the new iPad.

And it looks like there will also be a camera on the back, too, to keep consistent with the iOS lineup.

An iPad mini?

The newest tablets out there -- Samsung Galaxy Tab, RIM BlackBerry PlayBook -- seem to be converging on 7-inch screen size. And it's been rumored that Apple will also have a 7-inch iPad at some point.

Perhaps the market will eventually force Apple to make something like this. And there's no doubt that Apple has internally tested something like this. But we don't think this is going to happen in 2011.An iPad mini? by bestlaptopbattery.co.uk

Steve Jobs has slammed the 7-inch screen as being too small, and said that Apple thinks the 10-inch size is the minimum to create great tablet apps.

If anything, perhaps Apple will offer a bigger iPad before it offers a smaller one.

How thin can the iPad 2 get?

The next iPad will almost certainly be thinner. The existing one feels pretty hollow, so we think Apple could save some space on the inside and make a thinner iPad.

RIM promises that its BlackBerry PlayBook will be 10 mm thin, or roughly 1/3 thinner than the iPad. Samsung's Galaxy Tab is a hair thinner than the iPad, too.

Apple has a habit of making things unbelievably thin, like the original iPhone, and the iPhone 4, and the new MacBook Air. So look for Apple to really wow people here.

I'm sure Apple can answer these 7 questions perfectly.

Apple's iPhone: No FaceTime on Verizon's 3G network

For all the supposed benefits of Verizon's network for iPhone users, they'll experience one of the same limitations there that they have on AT&T: They won't be able to make video calls using Apple's FaceTime program over Verizon's 3G network.

Apple and Verizon officials confirmed Wednesday that the Verizon version of the iPhone -- like the AT&T one before it -- will only be able to make FaceTime calls while connected to Wi-Fi hotspots.

"FaceTime requires Wi-Fi," Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said in an e-mail exchange. "Same as on iPhone 4 on AT&T today."

Apple has limited FaceTime to Wi-Fi calls since it unveiled the software in June when it launched the iPhone 4. Company officials said then that limitation would stay in place through the end of 2010. But at the time, company officials said they would be talking with Apple's carrier partners about allowing FaceTime calls on their cell phone networks and held out the possibility that iPhone users would be able to make such calls this year.

There's been some concern that video calling using FaceTime or other programs would stress cell phone networks, since video applications tend to consume vast amounts of bandwidth. AT&T's network has already been stressed by the iPhone and the company has been widely criticized by iPhone users for dropped calls, slow data throughput and inaccessible service. That made its lack of support for FaceTime understandable, if frustrating to iPhone users.

By contrast, Verizon has touted the resilience of its network and said it is more than ready to handle iPhone users' data traffic. But at least for now, that traffic won't include FaceTime calls.

IPhone users can make video calls on AT&T's network using other applications, including Skype and Fring. A Verizon representative declined to say whether those programs will work on the company's network also, directing the question to Kerris. Kerris did not immediately respond to an e-mail inquiry.

Apple's iPad surpassed Acer's sales in fall

Apple's iPad cut dramatically into Acer's sales this fall, IDC estimates showed today. In the US, Acer's computer numbers plunged 28.5 percent compared to a year ago, dropping it from 11.8 percent share at the end of 2009 to virtually tie Apple's share at 8.8 percent. Apple itself was the fastest mover and jumped from 7.2 percent a year ago to reach 8.7 percent.

Toshiba was helped by Acer's slump and may have cannibalized those users who didn't buy an iPad instead. Its pace was only slightly slower than Apple's and was helped by its larger established share to move up to 9.8 percent of American notebooks. HP and Dell kept their leads but both dropped over five percent each.

Worldwide, the iPad's effect on Acer was still pronounced as its market share dropped 15 percent, to 10.6 percent, and nearly let fast-moving Lenovo take third place. HP still lost a slight amount of share, but Dell grew internationally where Toshiba also moved up.

Combined, PC shipments as a whole were sluggish and only climbed 2.7 percent worldwide and were ultimately down 4.8 percent in Apple's home country.

IDC directly blamed Acer's poor results on "lackluster sales" of netbooks, its previously favorite category, and strong sales of the iPad. PC demand had been hurt by the "stellar uptake" of tablets in the fall and led many to either have no money left over for a full computer or to have no interest in getting one. The company was hurt beyond the US and felt a similar blow in Europe. HP was also impacted, the analysts said.

The situation was only likely to get worse in 2011, Research Director David Daoud said. A rush of tablets such as the Motorola Xoom could "put a dent" in the computer market. Many are either leery of continuing to buy new systems or are tired of the usually Atom-based netbook designs.

"Consumer fatigue is playing an important role in many markets as the [netbook] surge wanes and consumers watch their spending and evaluate other products," Daoud said.

For all of 2010, Apple's success with Macs and impact on other PC makers with the iPad helped it tie almost exactly with Toshiba for fourth place and 8.8 percent share in the US. Acer held third but lost share at 10.7 percent, while HP and Dell also lost some ground at 25.9 percent and 23.1 percent each.

iPad 2 'leak' has Apple die-

A dummy iPad 2 surfaced in Las Vegas last week and speculation is swirling over whether it is based on leaks from the factories, an Apple plant or just a hoax.

The impending release of the original iPad overshadowed last year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and at this year's show, despite around 80 Android- and Windows-based iPad competitors being launched, Apple was once again on everyone's lips.

Several Chinese iPad accessory makers showed off iPad 2 cases and one had a non-working dummy model that is slimmer than the original iPad, has better speakers and built-in cameras. Apple purportedly provided the dummy models to accessory makers so they could build their products ahead of the launch.
Advertisement: Story continues below

The features on the dummy model, a video of which has made it to YouTube, fit nicely with widespread rumours about the iPad 2, which is expected to be unveiled by Apple CEO Steve Jobs in the coming months.

Apple Australia refused to comment on the matter, saying it did not comment on "rumour and speculation".

If the design is legitimate it would not be the first time an Apple product has leaked ahead of the launch. In April last year, months before the iPhone 4's launch, Gizmodo bought a prototype of the device for $US5000 from someone who had found it in a bar.

Some have speculated that Apple planted the iPad 2 shell at CES in order to steal some of the buzz from its competitors.

But Anthony Agius, founder of Australian Apple community website MacTalk, is not convinced that the cases and dummy models are based on any information provided by the notoriously secretive Apple.

"Apple certainly didn't give these case manufacturers the info. The specs were leaked from the factories that are making or tooling up to make the iPad 2," he said.

"As to if it's what the iPad 2 will look like - I think there's a big chance that those fakes are accurate as to the exterior design and specifications of the iPad 2."

Matthew Powell, editor of MacTheMag, said he was "hesitant to dismiss this out of hand" as while it would seem unlikely for an Apple product to leak, "it does fit with some known data points about the design of iPad 2".

"I remain skeptical about a February release date for iPad 2 (I think late April makes more sense) but I'll be surprised if it doesn't end up looking a bit reminiscent of the model in the video," he said.

Agius said there was no doubt that Apple would unveil the iPad 2 "some time before March and releasing it no later than mid-2011".

Well-known tech entrepreneur Kevin Rose, who started the link sharing site Digg.com, said this week he had it on "good authority" that Apple would be announcing the iPad 2 in the next "3-4 weeks".

"If you're thinking of buying an iPad, hold off for now," he said.

Google's Android More Vulnerable Than iPhone- iPhone is Best

According to Trend Micro Inc., the world's largest corporate security software provider, devices running Google's Android mobile operating software are more vulnerable to hackers and viruses than are Apple's iPhone devices.

During a recent interview in Taipei, Trend Micro chairman Steve Chang told Businessweek about Android's potentially dangerous security flaw:

Android is open-source, which means the hacker can also understand the underlying architecture and source code We have to give credit to Apple, because they are very careful about it. Apple has a sandbox concept that isolates the platform, which prevents certain viruses that want to replicate themselves or decompose and recompose to avoid virus scanners.

Chang points out that Android's open-source software offers more of a free-for-all scenario. "Chang said he's betting Android users will start to buy more security software for mobile devices," writes Businessweek.

This news comes at a time when the Android OS's popularity is growing rapidly in the United States. Indeed, Nielsen figures from June 2010 through November 2010 show Android to be the leading mobile operating system among recent smartphone buyers.

Although Apple's app approval process is notoriously strict, Apple devices may still be vulnerable to malicious software and third-party hacks. For example, iPhones are prone to phishing attacks, which can dupe the user into handing over personal data.

Apple's Mac App Store Hits One Million Downloads in First Day

That didn't take long. Apple has announced that its recently released Mac App Store—literally, launched on January 6, 2011—racked up more than one million app downloads within a 24-hour time period. The figure's even more impressive given that the store itself only launched with, "more than 1,000 apps," as opposed to, say, 50,000 or something--that's a lot of multiple app downloading.

"We're amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, in a press release distributed by the company. "Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is."

Evernote, makers of the identically named software that helps one keep track of to-do items, would have to agree with Jobs. According to the company, more than twice as many users have been signing up for its software using the Mac App Store than by previous methods, which includes both desktop and mobile downloads.

Richard Gaywood over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog slogged through 2,004 different apps (as found on the UK version of the store) in an attempt to generate deeper analytics as to what, exactly, makes up the core of Apple's app business. According to him, the predominant category in the Mac App Store is games, eating up around 600—or nearly one-third—of all programs present.

Utility-, productivity-, and entertainment-themed apps number around 200 apiece, but even this can be a bit of a misnomer, reports Gaywood. The Mac App Store might be set up into roughly 35 different categories of apps to download, but a number of apps can be found in multiple category listings.

As far as pricing goes—another eye-opener for those accustomed to paying $1 or so for apps for their various mobile Apple devices—most apps on the Mac App Store live within the category of apps priced at $5 or under. Less than 100 of the apps Gaywood surveyed are free, and slightly over 300 cost anywhere from $10 to $50.

Only a scant few apps, less than 20, push past $100 within Apple's Mac App Store. And of these, the most expensive application is Distribute—"a single user, purchase, inventory and sales manager built exclusively for Mac OS X," reads the app's description. Picking up one copy of this app will set you back $700.

Disney's A Christmas Carol [3D] [4 Discs] [Includes Digital Copy] [Blu-ray/DVD]

A Christmas Carol is as much a part of the Christmas tradition as Santa Claus and mistletoe, so it's no surprise that this year there's yet another film version of the classic story. In Disney's A Christmas Carol, the animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic tale of charity, redemption, and embracing the Christmas spirit, director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) creates a visually stunning multi-sensory thrill ride that's sure to please both kids and adults alike. The story centers on Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey), a penny-pinching miser who cares nothing for the people around him, least of all his hopelessly downtrodden employee Bob Cratchit (Gary Oldman) and infectiously optimistic nephew, Fred (Colin Firth). On Christmas Eve, after a frightening encounter with the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, Scrooge is visited by three spirits -- the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come -- who take him on an eye-opening journey to expose the truths he is reluctant to face. The film takes a while to get its footing, taking entirely too long to engage, but once Old Scrooge flies above the buildings of London while snow falls all around him, the audience settles in for quite a spectacle. Once again, Zemeckis teams up with ImageMovers Digital, the visual effects company that created the fantasy worlds of his last two animated endeavors, Beowulf and The Polar Express. As he did with Beowulf, Zemeckis adds 3D to the experience (in selected theaters), setting this film apart from previous adaptations of the classic story. The utilization of motion capture and computer-animation technology adds an incredible amount of detail and realism, most notably with Carrey, who expertly portrays four different characters in the film, including the three ghosts. For the most part, the film stays true to the original source material -- from the Victorian vernacular to the visual representation of the three ghosts first illustrated by John Leech for the original publication -- yet, Zemeckis takes liberties with certain sequences in an attempt to drive home the overall theme and showcase the visual effects. Though the film is sprinkled with moments of humor that one would expect from a film with a comedic performer like Carrey, there's a visually frightening element; with haunting imagery amplified by the CG effects, the film barely earns its PG rating. Still, the sense of wonder and enchantment overpowers this, and by the end everyone will be infected with the Christmas spirit.

At CES, Lenovo marries Windows and Android in potential iPad-killer

Someday, Apple's iPad and rival tablet computers may completely replace the PC for a large number of users. But for now, tablets are mainly a companion device, a diversion for those times you'd like a fun, portable computer and don't need to do real work. But that may all change this week at CES, the consumer electronics show expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors to glitzy Las Vegas.

The major device manufacturers are unveiling a plethora of tablets based on Google's Android operating system as well as Microsoft's Windows. One early contender from Lenovo puts both operating systems on the same machine and gives users a complete notebook and tablet experience.

I had the opportunity to see a demo of Lenovo's IdeaPad running both Windows 7 and Android in notebook and tablet form Tuesday, and came away quite impressed. Naturally, I might see five or ten tablets that blow it out of the water by the end of the week, but for now I think Lenovo has a very promising solution to the conundrum of providing the fun of tablets to users who aren't ready to give up the traditional laptop.

That's because Lenovo's IdeaPad hybrid running Windows 7 and Android really does give you both. At first, the Lenovo machine looks just like a regular laptop, although a bit small with a 10.1-inch screen. But as Lenovo "brand ambassador" Stephen Miller demonstrated, you can switch between Windows 7 and Android with a simple flip of a switch. And even more amazing, the notebook running Windows acts as a dock for the Android tablet, letting users remove the monitor and use it in just the same way you'd expect to use any Android-based tablet.

Lenovo calls it "the IdeaPad U1 hybrid with LePad slate, a unique two-in-one device that combines the mobility of a media-rich, high-definition slate featuring access to Android applications and a keyboard base that provides a full Windows 7 computing experience."

Lenovo IdeaPad

While moving from Windows to Android on the IdeaPad seemed almost instantaneous, it took a bit longer to move from Android back to Windows. An adventurous user could potentially solve that small problem by replacing Windows with the faster-booting Ubuntu Linux. But the switching times between Android and Windows are small enough that it probably wouldn't bother most users.

While iPads, iPhones and Androids are already moving into corporate networks, I can't help but think that a tablet/notebook combo running both Windows and Android will make the whole concept even more palatable to IT directors. Even those IT shops that aren't quite ready for Android would be willing to let users hook up a Windows notebook to corporate systems.

The specs for Lenovo's hybrid IdeaPad are impressive compared to standard netbooks, but may not live up to the full laptop experience. A spec sheet distributed by Lenovo shows two different sets of statistics, one for notebook mode and one for slate, as the system consists of two different devices. In notebook mode, IdeaPad runs an Intel Core i5 processor with speeds of 1.2 GHz and 2GB of memory. By way of comparison, the Windows 7-based Lenovo ThinkPad I am typing this blog post on has double the RAM and processor speed.

In slate mode, IdeaPad will have a 1.3 GHz processor from Qualcomm, 1GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of flash storage. The notebook portion, by the way, will have a sizable 320GB hard drive. The system demonstrated at CES had one USB port but no disc drive or SD card slot.

You'll be able to buy the tablet portion by itself for about $520 but the whole system including the Windows 7 notebook will set you back $1,300, more than twice the cost of a basic Apple iPad.

The price point "is more notebook-y" than a typical tablet, Miller notes. But the cool design and usefulness of the Windows/Android combo will be alluring to a wide range of consumers and business users, he predicts.

"Everybody wants a tablet. Everybody still has a notebook," he says.

Still, the $1,300 price point makes it nearly as expensive as a version of the Apple MacBook Air that has a larger screen and 4GB of RAM. Tablets are definitely the cool product of 2011, so perhaps the combination of a notebook and tablet will convince consumers that it's worth buying even if they're not getting the same amount of power they might receive in a traditional laptop.

Lenovo is trying to build excitement for the new IdeaPad even though it's not for sale in the United States yet. The demo version is running Android 2.2, and Lenovo will release a commercial version in the U.S. once Google unfurls Android 3.0, expected this summer, Miller says. The commercially available version will also feature newer Intel chips and graphics processors.

The IdeaPad hybrid will be available earlier in China, in the first quarter of this year.

While Lenovo's Windows/Android tablet looks like an enticing device, it will have plenty of competition for the spotlight at CES. NEC, for example, is expected to show off a dual-screen tablet running Android and there are likely to be many other interesting takes on the tablet space. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will give a keynote speech Wednesday, and it's possible he could discuss how future versions of Windows or Windows Phone 7 might play into the tablet market (although some reports say Microsoft will instead discuss a new television offering at CES). Whatever happens on the tablet front, we'll keep you updated the rest of the week at CES.

Cheap iPad Offers Suffer Sluggish Sales

Cheap Apple iPads offered by wireless carriers to cash-in on the Christmas season have been plagued by poor sales figures.

UK wireless carrier Orange has been offering the Apple tablet at a subsidised rate of £199, although it seems customers have not been keen to sign up for the 24 month contract that comes as part of the deal. This would require users to pay £25 every month on top of any phone and broadband bills.

A report on PaidContent says that the company had expected to sell tens of thousands of iPads during the holiday season, but ended up selling a mere 1,000 according to industry insiders.

Orange claims that sales have since grown, although they have not yet denied the low numbers quoted.

“As expected, our iPad sales have grown significantly week-on-week in the run up to Christmas as awareness that we were ranging the product increased, and it remains one of the key devices in our portfolio for the seasonal period,” an Orange spokesperson said in a statement.

Other wireless carriers such as Three and T-Mobile have also had similarly disappointing sales figures.
