Apple’s Next Macintosh OS

Operating systems don’t age well. Some have better genes than others or they have more competent caretakers, but sooner or later they are stricken by a cancer of bug fixes upon bug fixes, upgrades upon upgrades. I know, I lived inside two OS sausage factories, Apple and Be, and was closely associated with a third, PalmSource. I can recall the smell.

The main cause of OS cancer is backwards compatibility, the need to stay compatible with existing application software. OS designers are caught between yesterday and tomorrow. Customers want the benefit of the future, new features, hardware and software, but without having to jettison their investment in the past, in their applications.
OS architects dream of a pure rebirth, a pristine architecture born of their hard won knowledge without having to accommodate the sins of their fathers. But, in the morning-and in the market-the dream vanishes and backwards compatibility wins.

Enter the iPhone.

The iPhone OS, iOS, is a Macintosh OS X derivative…but without having to support Macintosh applications. Pared down to run on a smaller hardware platform, cleaned up to be more secure and tuned for a Touch UI, iOS is the dream without the ugly past. Tens of millions of iPhones, hundreds of thousands of applications, and billions of downloads later, this is a new morning without the hangover.

And now we have the iPad, another iOS device. (I’ll omit the newer Apple TV for the time being.) 8.5 million iPads were shipped by September, a mere six months after its introduction. The installed base will reach 14 to 15 million units by the end of this year.

To paraphrase the always modest Apple PR boilerplate phrase (“Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s …”) the iPad re-ignited the marginal tablet category.

After more than 30 years of stalled attempts, the tablet genre has finally gelled. We see a flurry of tablet announcements from Asus, HP, Samsung, Dell, Archos, and many others, using Windows 7, WebOS, and Android. Surprisingly, we have yet to hear a pundit declare 2011 ‘The Year of The Tablet.’ It’ll come.

On the other hand… Apple held a Back to the Mac event at its Cupertino HQ last week. As the name implies, Apple wants to make it clear that it’s still committed to personal computers. (You can see the full keynote here…but that’s 90 minutes. A tongue-in-cheek, adjective-laden 104 second montage gets to the essence here.) The iPhone may generate half of Apple’s revenue, but the event reminded us that Macintosh desktops and laptops are a $20B/yr business-a business that’s growing faster than the rest of the PC industry. Apple made a point of showing how the iPad, after taking its genes from the Mac, was feeding DNA back to its progenitor by way of the Touch UI that will appear in the release dubbed “Lion”, OS X 10.7.

Back to the Mac

During the Back to the Mac presentation, two prayers of mine were answered: A Macintosh App Store and a smaller laptop. The App Store has received the expected “walled garden” critique, but having seen how difficult it is for small Mac software developers to get retail shelf space or to make money selling their wares on line, I like the idea. A few days ago, I downloaded a neat little utility to silence the startup sound on my new 11” MacBook Air. How much did the developer make? Zero, it’s freeware; the programmer didn’t want to spend the time and money to set up a commercial site. How much would I have paid for it from a Mac App Store? Less than $5, more than 99 cents.
As for the 11” MacBook Air, Walt Mossberg, WSJ’s tech guru, penned an insightful review that’s neatly summed up in its title: “MacBook Air Has the Feel Of an iPad In a Laptop”.
So: A clean, fresh iOS; we’re not abandoning the Mac…What are we to make of these competing messages? My theory:

* Today’s PC operating systems have advanced cancer

* Personal computers as we know them are here to stay

* Apple will move to something like an iOS Macintosh

Easier said than done. Steve Jobs remembers well the trouble Apple had getting apps for the first Macintosh, the painful failures of Lotus Jazz, the lame Mac software from Software Publishing Corp., creator of the best-selling PFS: series for the Apple ][. Ironically, some of the best software came from Microsoft-the word frenemy hadn’t been coined yet but retroactively fits. So, just like the iPhone App Store made the iPhone, the Macintosh needs a marketplace, an agora in preparation for the transition.

AVI to DVD Converter can easily can quickly burn AVI files to DVD Disc, convert AVI to DVD Video, decode AVI movie to ISO files.

AVI to DVD Mac is the most reliable DVD burner software for you to create DVD Slideshows, burn ISO images, convert videos and movies to DVD.

But a transition to what?

An evolution of the iPad? Certainly not something I saw at Il Fornaio, one of the local Valley watering holes. There, a very serious woman had her iPad standing on the official Apple keyboard dock, writing and, from time to time, raising her hand and touching something on the screen. As Jobs pointed out in the keynote above, it’s an ergonomic no-no.

Now, turn to the laptop. As one of my colleagues says: “It’s dark inside the box.” It’s what the machine does that matters, not what’s inside.

Indeed. Imagine a port of OS X on an ARM, or A4, or AX processor, or even a Loongson CPU for that matter. If the right applications have been ported or adapted or, even better, created de novo for the platform -and made available through the App Store-would we object?

But, you’ll argue, “Aren’t these processors much less powerful than Intel’s?” Ask an iPad user: The machine feels swift and fluid, much more than a conventional PC.

Yes, there are no heavy-duty apps such as Photoshop or
AutoCAD for the iPad. (AutoDesk publishes an AutoCAD companion app for the iPad and the iPhone.), but who knows? Adobe might be tempted to do for Photoshop what Apple has done for its OS: Scrap the past and build a modern Photoshop that’s written from the ground up.

Intel processors suffer the same type of cancer that afflicts operating systems. Their instruction sets and, therefore, their hardware, power consumption, and cost are beset by the tortuous need to stay compatible with existing code while offering an endless procession of new features. Intel has tried a fresh approach at least three times: the iPAX 32 in the early 80s, the Itanium (promptly renamed Itanic, a political compromise hammered out to keep HP’s PA architecture out of contention), and a brief fling with ARM called the XScale. Each time, the company (or the market) decided backwards compatibility was the way to go. Intel’s position is transparent: They believe that the might of their technology and manufacturing will bulldoze the cost and power consumption obstacles of the x86 architecture.

(We’ll note in passing that there is no Wintel in smartphones. For its Really Personal Computers, for its Windows Phone 7 devices, Microsoft is all ARM.)

Compare the bulldozer approach to what Apple did when it designed the A4, the “dark inside” of the iPad. Apple’s next Mac processor could be a multicore (or multi-chip) ARM derivative. And the company has proven time and again that it knows how to port software, and its support of the Open Source LLVM and Clang projects give it additional hardware independence. We all know the Apple Way: Integration. From bare metal to the flesh, from the processor to the Apple Store. Hardware, OS, applications, distribution… Apple knows how to control its own destiny.

Tomorrow’s MacBook Air might have even more of the “Feel of an iPad in a Laptop” that Walt Mossberg detected. The tablet and the laptop could run on the same “dark insides”, with the same software, and the same Touch UI interface. And, for a desktop machine, an iMac successor, we already have the Magic Trackpad for touch input.

(IMCO, the current Trackpad doesn’t feel magical enough: on the two devices I own, the touch input isn’t as reliable, pleasant and “second nature” as it is with existing mice or a laptop trackpads. I gave up after two weeks. I’m not the only one with that view, I’ve asked. And the local Apple Store doesn’t push appear eager to push the device either.)

All this doesn’t mean the x86-based Macs would disappear overnight: high-end Mac Pros, for example, might continue for a while as they do today for applications such as Logic Studio or Final Cut.

If this sounds farfetched, one question and an observation. The question: Would you bet the longer term future of your $20B Mac business on an endless series of painfully debugged x86-based OS X incremental releases? Or would you rather find a way to move that franchise to a fresh hardware/software platform fully under your control?

Apple shipping about 700,000 MacBook Airs, most wanted 11-inch display

The new MacBook Air from Apple is supposed to ship in its highest volume ever, according to analyst Mingchi Kuo from Concord Securities. 700,000 Macs out of the 4.1 million estimated to ship in the fall would be ultraportables. This means 17 percent of the total number. Furthermore, 420,000 of them would be represented by the 11-inch model, and the analyst is confident that buyers are inclined to trade speed for size and price.

The analyst’s story corroborates one of the largest Apple productions for the MacBook Air starting from September.

The analyst also says to know some parts suppliers. The 11-inch display would be made by AU Optronics, while the unibody aluminium chassis would be the creation of Catcher. Auras is supposed to make the heat spreader and the cooling fan. The final assembly is handled by Quanta.

A long term forecast is not possible, but Kuo thinks that the release of the Mac OS X Lion would represent a jumpstart able to bring customers towards the Air as a secondary option.

Traditionally, ultraportable sales have been associated to a niche, compared to larger product lines. Systems such as Sony VAIO X or Dell Latitude E series have often been downplayed when compared to bigger models. However, Apple has reversed this situation and has projected the Air as the long-term future of all of its designs. Therefore, its production numbers possibly reflect its position.

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook: Threat For Apple iPad?

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook Vs Apple iPad: The world has been in a state of uncontrolled frenzy ever since the time that Steve Jobs announced that Apple was releasing the iPad tablet computer a few months ago in the spring to summer time of the year. However, there is a reason for the great showing of the iPad from Apple in the market for tablet computers.

Up until this time the iPad was the only answer than pad makers had to the demand that was being generated by the users in the market. But times have changed now and now there are more answers to the questions. The Samsung Galaxy Tab as well as other makers has come up with new tablet computers running on the Android platform or other operating systems have been launched or are just about to be launched in the near future.
However, the greatest threat that the gurus believe would have been posed to the iPad is by the announcement of the RIM Playbook. The first reason why the RIM tablet is the most formidable opponent is that were holding the most market share in the US for smartphones only until a few weeks ago.

Also, the business class customers are almost certain to choose Research in Motion over Apple for the enterprise solutions and security features. But that is not the only reason, the specs look mighty fine as well. the 7-inch screen is dwarfed by the 10.1-inch iPad screen but then it scores one up with a camera flash.

Also, the dual core processor processing at 1GHz and using a 1 GB of RAM makes it a list topper in performance. And the video capture is 1080 pixels of full HD, which Apple still have to match. The device would be launched in the first quarter of the next year and come that be, Apple is going to have some serious catching up to do for its iPad.

Features like dual cameras of 5 and 3 MP respectively, augurs well for the device. The flexibility to choose devices of up to 64GB also stands it in good stead and so does the battery life and the connectivity options available.

Good News: Microsoft unlocks Windows Phone 7 developers

REDMOND, Wash.--Microsoft is making a change to its policies for Windows Phone 7 that will allow applications to more easily run when the screen is turned off.

Until now, applications that wanted to run when the screen was locked had to get the user's explicit permission. Under new rules announced on Friday, programs can do so without permission--provided they first demonstrate to Microsoft that they only use a reasonable amount of battery life (allowing more than six hours of use for an app playing audio and more than 120 hours for a program that does not play audio). (Credit: Microsoft)

The move comes as the first Windows Phone 7 devices have gone on sale in Europe and Asia, with the first phones hitting the U.S. market on November 8.

The policy change is a matter of both convenience--audio apps, for example, make sense to play when the screen is off--as well as fairness. Many of Microsoft's own apps, including application downloading, e-mail syncing, and Zune playback and downloads are all allowed to happen in the background.

"This is an example of us continuing to listen to customers," Microsoft's Charlie Kindel said in an interview at Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference here. "We think it is a much better experience."

Some developers have complained that Microsoft allows only certain tasks to run in the background and also that its applications do things that third-party programs cannot. Background music playing is one such feature, while another is direct control of the camera for tasks beyond basic image capture. Microsoft has allowed, for example, hardware makers like LG to do an augmented reality app, but that is not something an ordinary developer can do using the available tools.

Kindel reiterated that Microsoft plans to add more controls and programming interfaces over time but has no plans to allow developers to write native applications. Third-party applications have to be written for either Silverlight or XNA development environments.

Congratulations: Apple wins patent on stainless steel improvement

Apple yesterday was awarded a patent on improving stainless steel by applying a thin layer of nitride to improve its resistance to scratches and impact without changing the look and feel of the metal. The patent, number 20100273538, is described as being "cost-effective" and yet could improve the hardness of the stainless steel considerably.

The process involves taking regular stainless steel, which is formed by fusing chromium and nickel into an alloy with the steel, and placing it in a superheated salt bath (between 520-580 degrees Celsius, or around 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit) and allowing the steel to absorb the nitride over the course of 45-90 minutes. The resulting coating should around 15 microns thick, and yet increase the hardness of the steel from a typical Vickers Hardness rating of 140 to around 1,000.

Because the process produces an obvious benefit at a reasonable cost and doesn't change the aesthetic qualities of the steel, the invention could have wide applications beyond where it is already being used, such as in the iPhone 4. Apple's web page for the iPhone describes the steel band in the product as being "created from our own alloy" and "five times stronger" than standard steel, both of which fit in with the specifications of the newly-awarded patent.

White iPhone 4 Removed From Apple’s Website- So Disappointed

Oh White iPhone 4, it was nice getting a preview of you. After multiple setbacks from the launch of the iPhone, to later in the Summer, this Fall and next Spring, Apple has yanked the White iPhone 4 from its website.

Not that it was ever officially available for pre-orders, it at least had a “coming soon” text below it when you try and order an iPhone. Its removal only spells one outcome: it will never release.
Rumors surfaced sometime this week that it still may release next Spring. Many (including us) doubted that Apple would release a white version of the current model thisclose to the iPhone 5, and we were right.

RIP White iPhone 4. We’ll miss you (or not).

I'm so disappointed when the news spread, I always want to have a white iPhone 4, although I have an iPhone 3GS. Just Come out, white iPhone 4!

Apple is now number 4 mobile phone vendor

The bean counters at International Data Corporation (IDC) have run the latest shipment numbers from all the handset makers and made a startling discovery. Apple, who wasn’t even making phones until just a few short years ago, is now ranked number 4 in terms of mobile devices sold. I’m not talking smartphones now, I’m talking all phones. Nokia of course remains on top since they ship devices that cost less than what you spend on dinner for two and a movie in the EU/UK/US. They shipped 110.4 million devices, giving them 32.4% of the market. Next up is Samsung, who for the first time in the company’s history has managed to ship over 70 million devices in a single quarter. They’re at 21.0% market share with their 71.4 million units. Third we’ve got LG, who is doing pretty bad after selling “only” 28.4 million units, less than the 31.6 million from a year ago, yielding 8.3% market share. And now Apple, who managed to ship 14.1 million iPhones, commands 4.1% of the market. Let that soak in a little. Grab 100 random people off the street, and 4 of them will have an iPhone.

In last place is RIM, who even with their refreshed operating system, has only managed to ship 12.4 million units, giving them 3.6% of the market. Now let me say something about all the numbers above. They don’t really matter. For investors they do, but for the regular consumers … who really cares? Ford used to ship the most number of cars, but it doesn’t mean they made the best, and while it’s tempting to use the Apple = BMW analogy that most fanbois use, I’m not going to because it’s too easy. Value share is the new important metric, and I’m hoping we’ll get more analyst firms reporting those numbers instead. Apple, with their 14.1 million iPhones, by some estimates makes $1 out of every $3 spent on handsets.

Apple iPhone PIN bypass fix due next month

Apple says it is "aware" of a security weakness that allows anyone to bypass iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 PIN codes with a few button presses and will fix it in a software update next month.

RMVB to iPhone 4 Mac is an easy-to-use RMVB to iPhone 4 Converter for Mac]

"We're aware of this issue and we will deliver a fix to customers as part of the iOS 4.2 software update in November," Apple Australia said in a statement provided early this morning.

Yesterday this website reported a security flaw that allows anyone to bypass the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 PIN code by pressing a couple of on-screen buttons followed by pressing one of the iPhone's two main physical buttons.
Advertisement: Story continues below

The bypass doesn't allow full access to the smartphone but does allow one to browse its photo gallery, send an MMS message, make phone calls, see all of the iPhone's contacts, send a contact card via email and play music using the iPhone's voice control function.

Both iPhones tested were running the latest software. The iPhone 3GS doesn't appear to be affected. After publication, further testing with the iPhone 3GS did allow for this website to bypass its PIN. Rapid execution of a certain button press instead of a delayed press was key to bypassing its security.

Due to legal reasons this website cannot describe the method used to bypass the PIN but many websites have described it.

In October, a daylight saving time bug caused some Australians to have their iPhone alarm clock wake them up either one hour early or one hour late. Apple said it would fix that bug in "an upcoming update".

The new Apple MacBook Air

Two of the most common wish-list items from prospective Apple customers have been a smaller, sub-13in. MacBook and a less-expensive version of the ultrathin MacBook Air. The new 11.6in. version of the MacBook Air kills both birds with one stone: it's the smallest current Apple notebook (there were 12in. PowerBook models as recently as five years ago), and it lowers the entry price to £849 (inc. VAT; £722.55 ex. VAT) — coincidentally, the same as the white basic 13in. MacBook.

The end result is a notebook that feels like a cross between a traditional aluminium MacBook and the wave of upscale 11.6in. premium netbooks that have caught our attention this year.

The MacBook Air is a product line that, in its previous life, had a dedicated cult following but never found a mainstream audience because of its high price and lack of distinction from the rest of Apple's 13in. notebook lineup. It was thinner and lighter, but still not quite different enough to justify the hefty investment. By doing more to differentiate the product, and dropping the entry price, the new MacBook Air succeeds in carving out more than an enthusiast niche for itself.

The quick boot times, long battery life (with extra-long standby time), and excellent keyboard/trackpad combo make this our new go-to ultraportable (if price is not an issue), with our enthusiasm muted only by a missing SD card slot and older low-voltage CPU.

If anything, the addition of an 11.6in. size is a nod to the past several years of notebook development, where small, inexpensive netbooks started as a niche market, with 7in. and then 9in. screens, then moved into the mainstream with 10in. and 11in. versions. Since the start of the MacBook era, Apple had largely ignored the shift in notebook prices and sizes, opting instead to stick to the higher end of the market, and not venturing below 13 inches.

The new MacBook Airs, in both the 13in. and 11in. formats, are incredibly thin and light, even to someone used to working with very small notebooks (such as Sony's SSD-based VAIO Z models). The all-metal construction keeps it from feeling too fragile — often an issue for ultrathin systems. The shape is closer to the previous Air than we would have expected, given the radical redesign the iPhone 4 got over its predecessors. The body is tapered toward the front, creating an optical illusion of even more thinness (although it's still only 1.7cm thick at the rear): interestingly, the 11in. and 13in. models both narrow down to the same 0.3cm.

The large keyboard and trackpad (which is the same glass version found on other MacBooks) both work well, although the function keys at the top are very small. The F5 key is the only one missing a secondary function; on other MacBooks, it's for the keyboard backlight. Typing was typically excellent, but we're so used to the backlit keys on other MacBooks that we missed it instantly.

Apple's large multitouch trackpad remains the best available, largely thanks to the software that enables gestures control. The pad is hinged at the top, allowing the entire pad to click down, but we prefer traditional tapping (which is off by default and must be activated in the Preferences menu). Other notebook makers have subsequently added similar clickpads, and we hear the next generation of clickpads will fully depress, instead of working off a top hinge, which should make for an even better experience.

The inclusion of the latest version of Apple's iLife software suite is notable. The iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand apps include tons of useful and fun features, and are ideal for casual consumers (although pros will likely stick with Photoshop, Final Cut and Logic or Pro Tools). The most notable new additions are iPhoto slideshows that place pictures on an interactive map with GPS data, and a series of amusing movie trailer templates in iMovie, complete with canned Hollywood-style scores.

It's not necessarily a software feature, but the system boots extremely quickly. Apple calls it Instant On, and although it's not exactly instant, it boots up very quickly — faster even than an iPad.

This is the first MacBook with a 16:9 display (the 13in. model is still 16:10), and it uses the same 1,366-by-768-pixel native resolution as most 11in. - 15in. notebooks. The screen area lacks the edge-to-edge glass over a black bezel found in other MacBooks: instead, the screen is surrounded by a thick silver bezel. Perhaps it's to save on weight, but it's the only aesthetic blemish on the system. There seems to be a lot of extra real estate around the actual screen, and one can assume the extra room was required to keep the keyboard from feeling cramped.

Doubling the USB ports over the original Mac Book Air from one to two is a welcome gesture, but only the 13in. model has an SD card slot (seriously, Apple: every 10in. £250 netbook has an SD card slot, it's not that hard). Even more disappointing, even the 13in. version lacks a backlit keyboard. Likewise missing: dedicated VGA or HDMI outputs (you'll need an aftermarket adapter for the Mini-DisplayPort jack). You'll look in vain for onboard Ethernet or integrated mobile broadband either.

There's a legitimate concern for hard-drive hogs that the 64GB or 128GB of SSD storage space may not be enough for high-res photos and video. We've rarely filled up too much of a hard drive, but today's notebook users are more used to 500GB of space on even the most basic systems.

The 11in. MacBook Air feels speedy enough — closer to a full-size notebook than than most dual-core 11in. premium netbooks. That makes sense, as the Core 2 Duo/Nvidia 320M combo is similar to what you'll find in the current £849 (inc. VAT) white MacBook (although this is a ULV version of the Core 2 Duo in this case). It's especially interesting to compare this with the 11.6in. Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T-68U118, which has a low-voltage Intel Core i7 CPU for $899 (£567). Acer's system was faster in our Photoshop and iTunes tests, but slower than the MacBook Air in our multitasking test. It's not as fast as a non-ULV system, but the MacBook Air is about as good as you're going to find in this 11in. arena.

There is some confusion over Apple's use of Intel's older Core 2 Duo line in both the MacBook Air, and also in the 13in. MacBook and MacBook Pro, but the back-and-forth performance lead compared with the ULV Core i7 Acer Timeline shows that this isn't a deal killer. The real reason for the Core 2 Duo is so Apple can include the pretty decent Nvidia 320M graphics chip. If the MacBook Air had used an Intel Core i-series processor, it would have to use Intel's uninspiring integrated HD Graphics or else a fully discrete Nvidia GPU (which is bigger, requires power and is more expensive).

Macs have never been known as gaming machines, but a few new features may change that perception. The Steam platform for online game delivery now has a Mac client (although the selection is still pretty thin), and the OnLive streaming game service works on Macs as well, and has the added value of allowing you to play PC-only games on a Mac.

In a cross-platform Call of Duty: Modern Warfare test, on medium settings at 1,366 by 768 pixels, the MacBook Air ran at 40.5 frames per second (fps) (thanks to the Nvidia 320M), whereas the Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T-68U118, which only has integrated Intel HD Graphics, ran at 15.fps.

MacBooks have always been known for the long battery life, and the Air continues the trend. The large, sealed battery takes up much of the system's internal space, and it ran for 4 hours and 23 minutes. That's very close to Apple's 5-hour estimate, although the lowest-power netbooks and tablets such as the iPad have us more accustomed to all-day computing than ever before.

Service and support from Apple is always a dual-edged sword. Apple includes a one-year parts and labour warranty, but only 90 days of telephone support. Upgrading to a full three-year plan under AppleCare will cost an extra £199 (inc. VAT) and is pretty much a must-buy, considering the proprietary nature of Apple products. Support is also accessible through a well-stocked online knowledge base, video tutorials and email with customer service, or through in-person visits to Apple's retail store Genius Bars — which, in our experience, have always been fairly frustration-free encounters.
