iPad 3 delayed by Apple's ambitions

New York - Those of us salivating over the prospects of getting on our hands on the iPad3 in 2011 will likely be disappointed by all signs that point to mid 2012.
Apple always manages to astound the market by confounding tech analysts and consumers alike, producing innovative and slick products. So despite it’ stock (AAPL.O) closing at an all-time high Monday, $411.63, rapidly spreading news of the delay of the iPad 3 will deject millions of potential customers anticipating the next great lifestyle component.
The iPad 3’s 9.7-inch is rumoured to be enhanced with the so-called retina display technology (utilized on the iPhone 4) capable of 2048 x 1536 display, twice as many pixels as its predecessor.
Tech watchers have pointed out that certain technological restrictions are constraining speedier development of Apple’s next generation tablet, likely to be lighter and thinner if history is any guide.
Digitimes of Taiwan, a tech firm reported August 16 that Apple had canceled some component orders from Sharp, Samsung and LG that were otherwise intended for a 2011 iPad 3 launch.
On its own, the cancellation does not indicate such a long delay, but taken together with two other factors makes a mid-2012 release more likely.
In order produce a display four times as sharp as the iPad 2 on a 9.7-inch screen the backlighting source and mobile chip processor will need to be more powerful without depleting the unit’s battery power so rapidly. The chip used on current iPad 2s, the A5, cannot meet those demands, whereas the Quad Core A6 mobile processor will not be ready until the middle of 2012, according to the Linley Group.
As for the other reason for Apple’s delay, Mark Moskowitz of JP Morgan wrote:
We do not expect iPad 3 this year, but there's no rush. The other tablet entrants have stumbled. Offerings by MMI [Motorola Mobility] and RIM have been the latest disappointments. Also, we had the opportunity to demo Sony's tablet before its launch. We were not impressed. Sony's tablet lacks the refined, sleek feel of the iPad. We felt that the sloping or bezel-like back of the Sony tablet feels more like petrified, folded-over pages than a 21st century consumer electronics device.
Apple’s tablets have commanded a dominant position in the market, revolutionizing the interaction between consumers and the Internet by putting access to audio/visual content literally at one’s fingertips.
3 million iPads sold in the first 80 days of its launch, ending with almost 15 million shipped in 2010 and constituting 75% of market share.

iPhone 5 release date in China

Motorola and Google deal more than just patents, and it’s more expensive than before. Plus, Android’s next battle may be outside of United States.

Motorola Mobility and Google deal, inking the whopping $12.5 Bn, is not actually the initial amount that was offered by the search engine giant. According to the report posted by Bloomberg, the Mountain View, California-based company has initially offered $30 per share, but the advisers of the smartphone manufacturer reportedly countered the amount.

The website quotes the document filing that also revealed Google’s offers just to acquire the mobile-centric company. After the August 1 offer worth $30, Google reportedly increased the offer to $37 a share, and still on the same date, the search giant lifted the offer again to $40 a share, which is the final price that secured the biggest Google acquisition ever if the deal will push through.

On the company’s first press release related to the acquisition, Google said the deal is to protect the Android ecosystem from competitors in legal battles — like Apple’s multiple suits against Samsung Mobile, Apple’s suit against HTC, the Taiwan-based company behind the popular Evo 4G smartphone, and others including Microsoft’s. Apparently, Google’s Chairman of the board Eric Schmidt recently confessed, because he’s an honest person, that the Motorola Mobility deal is not just for patents, but also for the tapping of Motorola’s homegrown talents.

“We did it for more than just patents,” reveals Google’s Schmidt in an interview with Salesforce.com Inc’s Marc Benioff, adding that “the Motorola team has some amazing products.” The Google boss also mentioned the Razr as one of the biggest products of the mobile phone company.

Can Google create another “Razr” phone in the so-called post PC era? Apparently, the Razr phone never met the iPhone, which is arguably the most popular smartphone in United States based on the number of sales. Google on the other hand, is the company behind the open handset alliance, the Google Android powering the new popular devices from Samsung, HTC, Motorola and other companies like Sony Ericsson and LG. New emerging companies like Huawei and computer companies like Acer, Lenovo and Dell also tapping the new platform that also powers tablet PCs, or the new emerging device in the era of handheld tech products that can connect to the internet, and consume media in a fast and intuitive way.

Apple started the tablet market with the company’s iPad that recently received the refresh, the iPad 2. Compared to the tablet market which is still not the strongest point of Android, the Android’s smartphone dominance is quite obvious. However, Apple is set to rock the market again with a new device that will include new features that will satisfy its loyal customers, and could attract some Android smartphone owners to “go iPhone.”

The iPhone 5, or the so-called next generation Apple smartphone is reportedly arriving in mid-October. Aside from the expected initial launch in USA, where some adding that Sprint will finally join the iOS ecosystem, Apple’s strategy obviously includes other emerging markets outside of the country, like for example: China.

In a new report posted by multiple websites, the Apple iPhone 5 will hit the China Telecom next month, a wireless carrier that caters 108 million subscribers, which is as big as wireless carriers here in United States. How many subscribers can Apple tap here? Well, maybe millions especially if the Chinese telecom will give the subscribers the proper subsidy.

But Google Android is not into “sitting pretty,” because the smartphone operating system is expected to give its users the biggest refresh ever, the Android 4.0 that will bridge the gap between smartphones and tablets. Revealed by multiple tech sites, the 4.0 update will be the operating system version that the future Android smartphones and tablets will use, similar to Apple’s iPad and iPhone connection.

The new operating system update is also expected to include a phone, or the device that will launch and showcase the software, which is obviously the entry of the Android ecosystem against the iPhone 5, aside from other popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy S II, the ARM processor-powered smartphone from the South Korea-based company, and the new Motorola Droid Bionic, the 4G Long Term Evolution smartphone of Verizon Wireless powered by the Texas Instruments OMAP4 chip. Unlike the exclusive Droid Bionic, the Samsung Galaxy S II is available across the world.

Other devices from the Taiwan-based company HTC, or the other Korean manufacturer LG, China’s Huawei etc are also expected to introduce their own “iPhone killers” this year and early next year.

The Google and Motorola Mobility are also expected to give the Apple iPhone 5 the challenge, most likely next year.

5 Ways to Deal With Your Old Handset Before the iPhone 5

Apple is expected to unveil the next iteration of the iPhone before the end of October. The new device, dubbed the iPhone 5, will reportedly have a beefed up camera and possibly an edge-to-edge display and better battery and new design. If you're one of the expected millions of people planning on lining up for a new iPhone this fall, have you thought about what you're going to do with the handset you're carrying around in your pocket right now?

Here are five ways to convert your old iPhone (or almost any other old smartphone) into a new gadget, game or plain old cash.

iPhone = GameStop Credit

GameStop unveiled a new trade-in program for Apple devices in which you can get credit toward your next GameStop purchase or cash at most locations. GameStop will accept almost any Apple iDevice including the iPod Touch, Nano, Shuffle, Mini, iPhone and iPad. But the video game retailer plans on reselling your device, so it must be in working condition and without too many scratches and scuffs. Devices with personal engravings or water damage will not be accepted. You can choose to use your GameStop credit right away or store it on your PowerUp Rewards loyalty card for future use.

A GameStop official told PCWorld that the company wouldn’t disclose specific trade values, but did say that offers are fixed based on the device model. That means you should get pretty much the same offer from different GameStop locations in your area. Nevertheless, you would be wise to see what your device is selling for on eBay or Craigslist. That way you'll have a better idea what GameStop should be paying for your device before you accept the store's offer.

If you're looking to get cash for your device, you might want to avoid GameStop. The retailer said it's cash offerings are pegged 20 percent below the store credit value.

iPhone = Cash

If you want to get cold, hard cash for your device, one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get it is through trade-in sites such as Gazelle and NextWorth. These sites show you upfront how much they plan on offering you for your device based on the answers you give them to a short questionnaire. In my tests, Gazelle was offering $141 for a 16GB iPhone 3GS in good condition, while NextWorth was offering $120. Gazelle will pay for the shipping on trade-ins worth more than $1 and even sends you a box to ship back to them. NextWorth doesn't offer a box, but will give you a prepaid shipping label that you print out at home.

iPhone = Gift Cards

Wal-Mart and Newegg.com both offer trade-in services powered by Gazelle. The set-up is almost the same as dealing with Gazelle directly, the only difference is you get a gift card instead of cash. You can also choose to get an Amazon gift card instead of cash directly from Gazelle. NextWorth offers a similar gift card program with Target at nearly 1,500 stores nationwide, as well as J&R Music in New York City. Apple also offers a trade-in program where you can get an Apple gift card for your old device. Currently, the iPhone maker is offering $80 for a 16GB iPhone 3GS in good condition.

iPhone = DIY Cash

If you're not in a rush to unload your old iOS handset for cash, why not take the do-it-yourself approach and put your device up on eBay or Craigslist? You never know what people are willing to offer for your old device. Just make sure you wipe all your personal content off the device before selling it. You'll also want to read eBay's seller fees so you know how much the online auction site takes for hosting your sale.

iPhone = Cleaner Earth

If you're looking to unload an iPhone 4 with a cracked glass back or other defects that make reselling it impossible, there are many places you can recycle your old device. Apple accepts old devices for recycling, as does Gazelle. NextWorth will accept almost anything and recycle it for you. Many other retail outlets offer recycling including Best Buy, AT&T, Verizon and Wal-Mart.com.

Apple Has A Bad Day With Samsung And iPad 3

Apple faces a turnover of the Samsung injunction and iPad 3 may be delayed with screen supply problems

It was a black Wednesday for Apple. Samsung managed to overturn the European Union ban on sales of its flagship tablet, an action prosecuted by Apple, and the iPad 3 launch was “put back” because of technical problems.

Added to the news that if Google’s bid for Motorola Mobile goes through, Apple will lose some of its patents litigation power because of its reliance on Motorola technologies, it is probably not a good time to be in the Cupertino company’s boardroom.

Guilty Till Proven Innocent

The Samsung ban was granted in a Dusseldorf court last week under laws which apply automatically across the European Union countries. Samsung complained that it had not been invited and several bloggers have called it a case of the court assuming Samsung was “guilty until proven innocent”.

Apple won the injunction to ban the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 model based on a European principle of Community Design. The law was passed by the European courts in 2002 and, under the ruling, allows photos or sketches to be used to prove prior design rights.

DVD to iPad 2 is specially designed for Apple users.

DVD to iPad 2 Mac is a wonderful gift for Mac and iPad users)

In court, Apple showed a diagram of the iPad that was drawn up in 2004 which the courts accepted as prior art. In a separate hearing in the Netherlands, a Dutch court threw Apple’s case out for at least two months when Samsung showed images and actual models that had similar designs to Apple’s iPad.

One compulsive piece of evidence was a video made by publishing group Knight Ridder in 1994, ten years before Apple’s drawing, that showed a mock-up of a concept machine: a rectangular, black tablet that not only resembles the iPad but also was planned to display multimedia elements.

The reprieve for Samsung, which does not apply in Germany, may be short-lived in the rest of Europe as the court has said the ban will only be removed for a minimum of ten days – which is when the litigants meet head-on in the German courts on August 25.

Samsung issued a statement: “Samsung welcomes the Dusseldorf District Court’s decision to suspend the pan-European preliminary injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Samsung is fully committed to providing our innovative mobile devices to the market without disruption, and ensuring that consumers have a wider selection of innovative products to choose from.

“We look forward to the opportunity to reassert our intellectual property rights at the hearing scheduled on August 25,” the company said.

Display Of Concern

On the iPad 3 front, if Apple had any intention of launching a slightly smaller iPad in autumn, it now looks certain that it will not launch a tablet before 2012.

It appears that the new 9.7-inch higher resolution screens that have a 2048×1536 pixels display are causing concern. Apple hoped to source them from Sharp, Samsung and LG but Sharp is the only company to have successfully met the challenge.

Supply is a problem, and the current lawsuits with Samsung may mean the South Korean company will not be so keen to sell to Apple. This is just a temporary problem, more challenging is the likely desire of Apple to slim down the screens to keep the trim looks of the iPad.

The Sharp displays need a stronger and larger backlight than previous iPad screens. Given the leadership iPad has in the tablet market, it seems that Apple is content to wait.

The need for further research at Sharp is firing up rumours of a $1 billion investment coming from Apple.

iPhone 4 remains top-selling US smartphone

Despite iPhone 5 approaching, Apple iPhone 4 is still NO 1 hot sale smartphone.

Analyst T. Michael Walkley with Canaccord Genuity revealed in a note to investors on Tuesday that checks with U.S. carriers indicate that sales of the iPhone 4 remain on top ahead of the iPhone 5 debut, despite the fact that the iPhone 4 is more than a year old.

"Our checks indicated strong sales of the iPhone 4, as it remained the top selling smartphone at AT&T and Verizon despite increasing consumer expectations for the iPhone 5 launch," he wrote.

"During the holiday season, we anticipate strong sales of the iPhone 5, as we anticipate a strong global launch with increased distribution to new carriers including Sprint in the U.S. market."

Walkley's research found that the iPhone 4 remained the top-selling handset at both AT&T and Verizon in August. In addition, the $50 entry-level $50 iPhone 3GS was the second strongest selling handset at AT&T. Verizon does not offer the iPhone 3GS.

The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS beat out the $200 Samsung Infuse 4G, which was the third-best selling handset at AT&T. And at Verizon, the Samsung Charge 4G came in second, while the HTC Thunderbolt 4G was third.

"While Motorola Mobility and RIM enjoyed stronger sell-through trends in 2010, our (first half of calendar 2011) checks indicate a clear trend toward increasing share for Apple, HTC and Samsung," Walkley wrote.

In addition to strong sales of the iPhone 4, he also found that the 3G-capable iPad 2 is the top-selling tablet at both AT&T and Verizon, which are the only two carriers that offer the iPad in the U.S.

"Based on solid demand trends for iPhone/iPad, poor sell-through trends for competing tablet offerings, and the ramping iOS ecosystem driving longer-term replacement sales, we believe Apple will maintain dominant value share of both the tablet and smartphone markets to drive healthy long-term earnings growth," Walkley said.

IFA 2011: Top 9 Things We'd Love to See But Won't

While Berlin's annual consumer electronics fair has previously been a showcase of home appliances from TVs to fridges, it has become a battleground for manufacturers of wireless gadgets, according to Bloomberg News.

At IFA 2011 this week, Sony Corp., LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., among other device-makers, will unveil their new tablets/and or smartphones.

We've listed some things that we'd love to see at the tech show in Berlin, but wont:

9. Samsung Engineers Rubbing Elbows with Apple's.

Although Samsung has been producing chips for Apple's mobile devices, the two have been at a war that gets uglier each day. The maker of the iPhone, iPad and iMac has sued Samsung for patent infringement in every country mapped by Google. What's worse, Apple is asking the local courts to stop the sale of Galaxy S 2 and Galaxy S Tab on grounds that they're "slavishly" imitating Apple. What's even worse is that Samsung is running out of brilliant ideas, now saying that Stanley Kubrick's 1968 sci-fi film "2001: A Space Odyssey" invented the tablet.

8. Glasses-Free 3-D Devices That Actually Work.

Toshiba has already unveiled the world's first glasses-free 3D laptop, which uses a lenticular screen and integrated webcam. And LG Electronics has already released the LG Optimus 3D, which claims to offer "the world's first 3D experience on a smartphone." But the technology is still in its infancy. Like the LCD screens of laptops more than 10 years ago, these devices would likely show blurred pictures when viewed at the wrong angle or when exposed to sunlight. What could be more interesting is Sony's HMZ personal 3-D viewer, a futuristic little helmet that lets you watch 3-D movies. But would anybody actual sit alone with this $800 visor with an OLED screen? Nintendo released bulky Virtual Boy headgears for gaming 20 years ago, and the device flopped.

3D Movie Maker allows you to create Hollywood fabulous 3D Effects using any 2D movies like SD/HD Video or DVD movies or online videos, even the DRM-protected 2D videos.

Blu-ray 3D Ripper, the first software in the world which can independently manage the Blu-ray 3D to 3D video conversion.

7. Apple's Steve Jobs and His Turtleneck Shirt.

The man credited for propelling a company near bankruptcy to the world's most valuable tech company; at one point, richer than the U.S. government; and with zero long-term debt. Steve Jobs loves the stage and enjoys touting Apple's new devices. Jobs, the man who created the 21st century, would certainly steal the limelight from any devices exhibited at IFA 2011. Certainly, he resigned from Apple CEO because of poor health, it is reasonable he didn't show on the IFA.

6. The iPad Killer.

Even the world's biggest seller of desktops and laptops (Hewlett-Packard) gave up against the iPad. The tablet version of the BlackBerry (the PlayBook), Motorola's XOOM, and Samsung's Galaxy Tab, although cheaper than the iPad, have also failed to gain any ground. But Sony is releasing devices (one with a folded design, and another that looks like the Nintendo DS), which depart from the usual square, flat slab-style of the present tablets. Not only that, the devices are pre-loaded with games and have access to the PlayStation network. Talking about games, Nintendo is already unveiling the WiiU, its next generation gaming console that also works like an iPad. Amazon Inc., the world's largest online retailer, is also gearing up to sell its own tablet. But Apple's iPad has 75 percent of the tablet market. And few are buying the others because Jobs has created functional fashion statements (not the turtleneck shirts, but the sleek, easy-to-use products iPad, iPod and iPhone).

When it comes to iPad killer, it is so funny that some “Experts” predict Amazon will be the iPad killer: while Amazon entering the tablet market may give Apple a legitimate competitor in the space. LOL, Amazon has good sense of humor.

5. People Flocking Intel's Ultrabooks.

Apple has been providing us with brilliantly designed devices, but the problem with a single manufacturer is pricing power. Apple's devices are not cheap (the $3,000 MacBook Pro for example), and in the absence of competition, it can charge more for the iPad 3. One qualified challenger is the Ultrabook, a new class of mobile computer being promoted by Intel Corp. The Ultrabook will have the performance of today's laptops with tablet-like features. While the Intel device is expected to be more powerful than the iPad -- it is unlikely to take market share away from Apple. Although Intel has been bribing developers for more apps for the Ultrabook, Apple is already way ahead as more than available 100,000 applications optimized for the iPad that can be downloaded from the App Store, in addition to the more than 300,000 iPhone apps that can also work for the Apple tablet.

4. iPhone 5's Most Awaited Curtain Raising.

After Jobs decided to only talk about some cloud and updates to platforms for Apple devices at a developers' conference in June, there has been speculation that Apple won't be releasing the iPhone 5 this year. Apple has been unveiling a new iPhone every June for the past four years. Is it production problems, or is Apple still trying to add more features to the new iPhone?

3. A New HP Mobile Device (That Costs $99).

After Hewlett-Packard slashed the price of its HP TouchPad from $499 to $99, the HP tablet has suddenly become the hottest on the market. HP paid $1.2 billion for Palm Inc. in July last year, so it's unlikely the TouchPad is the only new webOS device in its pipeline. Since HP is killing its mobile devices business and is getting rid of the inventory, why not release other devices also at $99? It would not be surprising if HP makes an about-face, given that the webOS devices have now penetrated the market following the fire sales. Or it could wait until someone jail-breaks the HP TouchPad and gets it to run on Android.

2. Device That Shows the Glory That Was Nokia.

Finland's Nokia was previously the world's largest seller of smartphones. And including the $30 phones and other lower-end models, it is still the largest seller of mobile phones. After retiring the outdated Symbian and changing its mind with the Meego, Nokia is releasing its first batch of Windows-based phones. While Windows is the number one operating system for PCs, nobody -- except probably Bill Gates -- owns a smartphone running on Windows. With Microsoft still building apps for the Windows mobile ecosystem, it won't be at the IFA 2011 when Nokia will take back the crown from Apple and Samsung. Maybe next year.

1. Motorola Phones Designed by Geniuses at Google.

Google's search engine -- the world's most popular Web site -- is known for its classic, "less is more" design. Although Google has already developed the Android platform for mobile devices, it is interesting what aesthetics Google (minimalist like the Honeycomb?) will promote for future Motorola phones. After paying $12.5 billion for Motorola's mobile devices business, Google should needs more than the Droid to have a return on its investment.
